This medication is used to treat certain mental/mood disorders (such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and mania). This medication is not used to treat weight loss. Quetiapine is used to help to control the manic or depressive episodes of bipolar disorder (also known as manic or depressed mood) or to treat episodes of bipolar disorder in which the phases of bipolar activity do not overlap (such as mania or depression). This medication does not treat episodes of bipolar disorder. Some people who have episodes of mania/depression may also have bipolar disorder, but the manic or depressed phases may alternate.
Quetiapine (also known as quetiapine fumarate) is also used to treat insomnia. This medication is not used to treat depression. For people who are pregnant or may become pregnant, this medication should be used as part of a treatment plan to control or limit the development of complications associated with the expected pregnancy.
This medication is a mood stabilizer. It works by helping to stabilize the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. Drugs that lower mood or stabilize the balance of certain natural substances (mitochondria) will not have a positive effect on the mood or the ability to control the manic/depressive episodes of bipolar disorder (manic depression).
